    Letter of Intent (LOI)

    • If you begin homeschooling mid-year or move into a New York school district, submit within 14 days.

8 NYCRR §100.10 Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, practical answers to the questions New York homeschooling parents ask most about state compliance, grading, and record-keeping.

Q

Do field trips and extracurriculars count towards the 900/990 hours?

Yes! As long as the activity aligns with the educational goals outlined in your IHIP, it counts. Baking can be math/science, and museum visits cover history. EasyIHIP's AI generator can help you categorize these activities correctly.

Q

Do I have to give my child letter grades on the Quarterly Reports?

No. New York State allows for 'written narrative evaluations' instead of grades. You just need to describe the materials covered and state that the child is making satisfactory progress. EasyIHIP's templates support both grading and narrative styles.

Q

What happens if the school district rejects my IHIP?

Don't panic. If your district sends a notice of deficiency, you have 15 days to submit a revised IHIP. Often, they just need more specific details about your curriculum or textbook titles.

Q

Can I 'unschool' in New York State?

Practically, yes. Legally, you still must comply with 8 NYCRR 100.10. This means you must translate your child's natural learning into the required NYS subjects for your paperwork.

Q

Where can I read the official NYS Department of Education rules?

You can read the complete, official Home Instruction guidelines and regulations directly on the NYSED government website (Official Q&A).
